An Ode to Gratitude

Hello Reader,

Today is Thanksgiving in the US. I had never celebrated Thanksgiving until I moved to the US in 2013. What started as a cultural curiosity has since blossomed into one of my most cherished rituals – though these days in Hong Kong, it looks pretty different from the traditional American feast. The turkey hasn’t always been on our dining table on the last Thursday of November, but the practice of pausing to reflect on what matters most has taken root in our lives.

Over a non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner with my almost seven-year-old son – homemade bolognese, mine with tomatoes and his without, to accommodate his renal diet, I asked him what he was thankful for, he delivered a list so raw and complete—from the people he loves to the new building he doesn’t love for blocking our view—that it stopped me in my tracks.

His unfiltered wisdom was a powerful nudge. In the busyness of life—parenting, building a business, just keeping up—I, like many of us, had let my own gratitude practice slip. Yet, as a health coach, I know this isn't just a "nice-to-have." Science confirms it's a cornerstone of our well-being.

So, inspired by his honesty, I wrote again. I dug into the science and my own heart to share 12 heartfelt gratitude prompts with my stories. I hope they help us all rediscover the abundance already woven into our days.

This isn't about forced positivity. It's about the gentle, transformative work of shifting our perception—of realizing our own grass is plenty green if we only remember to look down.

In the post, I share my own small stories of thanks, from the profound to the simple. My hope is that it feels like a quiet conversation with a friend, offering you a moment of reflection as we head into this reflective time of year.

Here are 12 things I'm grateful for. The list is by no means complete. I’ve also included a gratitude prompt for you in each. Think of this as a journaling exercise, a meditation, or simply a quiet conversation with yourself over a cup of tea.

Food for Thought

There are actually two kinds of happiness:
1. Hedonic happiness (Pleasure, comfort, distraction.)
2. Eudaimonic happiness (Fulfillment. Purpose. Knowing your time here actually mattered.)
Hedonic happiness is cheap. It fades the second the buzz wears off. But eudaimonic happiness endures. It’s harder. It demands sacrifice. But it’s the only kind of happiness that leaves you whole.

I have been pondering on this a lot lately. When things get hard, it's a reminder to go back to the why and what kind of happiness we are pursuing.

When you're impatient with results, every day feels expensive. When you're impatient with effort, every day feels like progress.

When we fall in love with the process rather than the outcome, we don't have to wait to be happy.
